Based in Derbyshire, Bridgenway Mews started in 2017 by myself (Belinda) and husband David, who recently has taken a step back, but continues to be our unsung hero behind the scenes.
As a child, I was fascinated by anything that swam, crawled, flew or ran and this interest was encouraged by my late father, Wally Bridgen, who taught me to appreciate animals for what they are and how they live.
Upon leaving school I worked a s a Vet Nurse Assistant before getting my first Zoo Keeper position, which I had wanted since the age of 9 years old when I was first introduced to Reptiles.
I have worked at several Zoological Collections in the UK, with lots of magnificent beasts, including some captive breeding programmes with Chimps, Bonobos, Slow Loris, Bears, Aardwolves, Big Cats, Giraffes, Tapir , Reptiles and of course Birds of Prey. Qualifying as a Keeper in 1996 & making Section Head of Carnivores in 2007.
After doing an outreach talk to a Young Farmers Group, followed by a presentation on Aardwolves at an international enrichment conference, I decided to do more education sessions, going back to the classroom myself to get my teaching qualifications and got a job delivering Zoo, Wildlife and Exotic modules at a Brooksby College, which is where the idea of Bridgenway began. As I incorporate traditional training methods , alongside operant conditioning, the animals were trained the 'Bridgen Way' (my way).
